June's Mom of the Month

Congratulations to Melinda Rickard, our 'Mom of the Month' for June!

Melinda joined Stroller Stides this past winter and consistently attends classes with her adorable son, Baron. She is also a Running Mama, working hard in her second 5K session! On top of all that, Melinda has just started a new business as a consultant with Rodan + Fields! This new momma has made great strides in fitness, motherhood, and life, and we are so thankful that she is an integral part of our group!

Join us in congratulating Melinda and read on to get to know her a little better!

Mom of the Month Questions:

Hometown (where you grew up): I grew up in Centreville, VA.

Current part of the Triangle that you live in: I live in Raleigh (off of Tryon), but we are moving to Oakwood (downtown Raleigh) in July.

Education: I earned my Masters in Education from Meredith. I earned my undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech.

Fit4Mom Member since (what programs you do/have done): I joined Stroller Strides in December 2014. I have also done the past 2 seasons of Running Mamas.

Members of your Family: My husband, Brian and my son, Baron… and 2 very loyal dogs, Deebo and Berger.

Tell us about your children: Baron was born October 2, 2014. He is a fun-loving baby and always flashes his gummy smile. He’s a flirt with the ladies and he has learned to love Stroller Strides!

Current/previous Career: I was a first grade teacher at Weatherstone Elementary but I decided to stay home with Baron. I have most recently become a Rodan & Fields consultant. R&F is an amazing skincare line from the makers of Proactive. So if anyone wants any anti-aging or other skincare, let me know!

What was your childhood ambition? I wanted to become a truck driver or bus driver because I thought driving was so cool. Haha! Then I wanted to be a nurse or teacher because I wanted to help people.

What does motherhood mean to you? Motherhood means unconditional love… I never knew it until I met my son.

What is the furthest you have been from home? I lived in Hawaii before moving to NC. My husband and I love to travel. Europe is the furthest we’ve been, but we want to go to Australia some day!

What has Stroller Strides done for you (or meant to you)? Stroller Strides was my saving grace. I was not accustomed to staying home and I was very lonely. I used to work 10-12 hours a day as a teacher, up until the day Baron was born. Then I just became a stay at home mom. Stroller Strides gave me a reason to get out of the house every day in the winter. I was able to socialize and get in shape at the same time! I love the ladies at SS!

What has Running Mamas done for you (or meant to you)? Running Mamas helped me rebuild my running stamina and helped me focus on myself again. It gives me time for “me.” I can bring Baron, or he can stay home with daddy. Either way, I am focusing on myself again.

What is your favorite exercise? My favorite exercises are curtsey lunges and squats… the soreness after a long set of those is a soreness I love!

What is your proudest moment? My proudest moments are when I help a child reach their “ah-ha” moment. Whether it is helping my own son, Baron, or helping other students. I am so proud when a child reaches their “ah-ha… I can do it!” moment.

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)? Whiskey, Sweet Frog, and the beach.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique. I am deathly afraid of escalators. I will always take the stairs when possible. I’ve had to sit down on the really tall escalators in DC because I’ve almost fainted!

If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say? I asked Brian and he said, “loyalty, honesty, compassion, and mothering.” I hope he meant mothering Baron, not him!

What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape? Stick with it. It’s not only good for you, but good for your children. I am so pleased that Baron will grow up thinking that exercise is normal… it’s just something fun that we do every day!
